What is the best home remedy for a severe diaper rash?

flower asked:

My son (16 months) has a severe diaper rash. I cannot afford to go to the doctor. Is there anything I can do to help it heal faster? I already change as soon as he pees/poops as well as air drying his bottom and putting on plenty of diaper cream. What else can I do?

Air drying for a very long time and vaseline has always healed my daughters.

I swear that Vaseline works better for my daughter than anything I ever used on my older two. My daughter is 9 months and hasn’t had a rash since she was a newborn. Corn starch works great also.

  4. If it’s not going away it’s possible he has a yeast infection down there.

Personally, what I would do, is buy the daily monistate cream (not the egg) and put it on after diaper changes until it clears up.

If you’re not comfortable with that option, really you should have a doctor look at it.

Vaseline is great for skin protection if you want to try that first when you change the diaper.

You also might want to see if he has an allergy to something he’s eating.

Okay this is what most people say works the best is the rash creams. My baby had a really bad rash and I tried those and none of them worked I found out from my mom, my grandma and my great grandma the best thing to put in their is cornstarch, it takes out all the moisture which is what is causing the rash the baby needs to be dry so the cornstarch takes it all away. It is totally safe and makes their bum’s feel ten times better. My babies was cleared up in 2 days. It is totally safe trust me try it and you will never touch another cream again.

  6. The curable way is apply Diaper rash ointment which contains Zinc (10% or 20% or 40%). Every three hours change the diaper and apply the cream liberally along with petroleum jelly (more and more). Change diaper every 3 hours. It takes overnight after zinc ointment application.

From now on keep the baby without diaper for atleast an hour everyday. Also, try to be prompt changing diapers and applying cream. That really helps to avoid your headache and pain and your son`s pain.

  7. If you think it may be a yeast rash (raised bumps and/or raw looking), you can use over-the-counter yeast infection medicine on it instead of going to the doctor and getting a prescription. Ask the pharmacist what kind – I was told a certain kind was better but can’t remember what it is – and you want the tube of the stuff, not the individual pre-filled applicators.

  8. TRY HONEY!!!,PUT ON THE RASH.HONEY KILLS GERMS,I THINK,.

  9. Naked time. Lots of it! Just let him roll around in his nakedness but put down some crib or changing pads under him and make sure that the room is warm.
Also are you using wipes or washcloths?
We were using wipes when we first got our twins home and they both broke out in a horrible rash it looked like their bums were bleeding. So we got some cloths and used those and within 2 days no more rash! I threw out the wipes and havent bought ne more. He may have a sensitivity to the wipes and if he has a rash you should not be using them ne ways as they can further irritate him.

  10. Stop using Diaper till problem solved.

Once removed dry the area. Apply a Castor Oil . The medicated Oil is available in Pharmacies across continent.

take two three drops i suggest you warm it before applying as it will than easier to apply. Castor Oil is Very thick and warming it will reduce its viscosity.

i would take him to the doctor is using diaper rash cream hasnt worked and it’s been a few days you’ve been putting it on. yeast infection is highly plausable to be there instead and they need medication prescribed to them for that. your child should be on medicare still as his wellchild checkups shouldnt have stopped. if he isnt on any type of insurance there should be health clinics in your area you can take him to.

  12. Try leaving his diaper off for as much of the day as possible and just letting the air get at it. Also don’t use commercial wipes as they can sometimes irritate the rash further. If you do have to diaper him right away ensure that he is completely dry. I was told to use a hairdryer on a low setting for a minute or two. One more thing that may be a concern is if the rash is caused by a yeast infection. If that is the case you will need some antifungal ointment. Talk to a pharmacist they can be extermly helpful in situations like these. Good luck to you.

Small bath with a cup of baking soda to dry it out. Sounds like maybe it could be a yeast infection. Try feeding him yogurt and outing lotramin Athletes foot cream on it. These should help!

  14. My daughter had this as well. My Doc told me to let her air dry and try sit baths with warm water and baking soda in it. get one of those Rubbermaid containers put some warm water in it with baking soda and let him sit in it for 5 – 10 minutes. He also told me to cut out wipes and use washcloth with water … something about the ingredients in the wipes may aggravate it. good luck for you and him … hope you get it under control if not go see the doc … it may be something that needs a medicated ointment

  15. Ok if this is not going away it is probably yeast. Look at it closely…is it little red blisters rather than just red skin? If so then it’s yeast. Now, monistat will clear it up HOWEVER since he is a boy I would not use it on him. I have two boys still in diapers and their doctor said to put on Lotramin for jock itch. Try this and see if it helps…Worked wonders for us!

  16. Most importantly and I can not stress this enough… stop using wipes. Seriously. My son had a really bad diaper rash right around his **** hole when he was first born. It almost got to be like a yeast, because he was breastfed so he was crapping like 10 times a day so the skin got terribly irritated. My doctor told me (I know you don’t have money to go, but here is what I was told) to stop using wipes, use a damp soft cloth even paper towel, wet with a few drops of baby soap. Then he gave me a prescription for a cream, which I know you can’t get right now, but please stop using the wipes. Try some A&D ointment (instead of diaper rash cream) to help the present rash heal. Use it thinly. Also, make sure his onesies are not too small, keeping the diaper squashed up against him tightly… you do want air to get at it when possible. I don’t use the prescription cream anymore, but when I do see signs of redness on my son, I just dab a little A&D, stop using the wipes for a few days and it usually clears up immediately. Good luck, all my best to your son and his sore tush.

I understand that you cannot afford the doctors. But you might have to go especially since you have tried so much. My 20 month old is the same way. I had to take her to the doctor on Saturday due to a severe diaper rash. I tried everything (lotrimin, cornstarch, soaking in the tub, no wipes, ***** time). She actually had to be on an oral antibiotic cause she was starting to run a fever. I would consult a doctor. If you truly cannot afford a doctor due to lack of income in the household have you thought of applying for Medicaid? I know a lot of people don’t want to take charity, etc but you do what you have to do for your baby. But consult a doctor.

My son had VERY BAD diaper rash for a while after birth. I was always paranoid about this, so I always used Desitin with every diaper change. It never worked!

What DID work was removing his diaper completely & just letting him “air dry” for like 30 minutes or so. I did this a few times during the day. I avoided all creams, pastes, etc…as they can continue to trap moisture, which prolongs the problem. I changed him frequently (once an hour or so). When I did this, my son’s diaper rash was gone by the next morning. I no longer use pastes, creams, etc..and he has never had a recurrence.

  20. great home remedy –

chop up a bunch of garlic and put it in some olive oil. garlic works against yeast and some bacteria, we’ve used this anytime my baby boy had persistent redness or rash and it worked every time!

also check out what he’s eating – it might be a sign of an allergy.

    good luck!

cornstarch ..did it for both for my kids and no diaper rash!

  22. I’m a NICU nurse and if our babies get diaper rash we keep their bottoms open to air until it heals. If you feel uncomfortable doing that for a full day or so, try Bordeaux’s **** cream…it works great to create a barrier from the irritating stool & urine. Just remember if it doesn’t start looking better in several days, you should contact your pediatrician…they can prescribe a nystatin cream that would kill yeast(usually looks like lots of small red dots very close together making the skin appear red, it also smells “yeasty”). Also, try unscented and alcohol free wipes, they can irritate the skin further even to the point of bleeding. Hope this helps.
