Is there anyone else out there using cloth diapers?

Peanut Butter Graham Crackers asked:

I personally use cloth diapers and have with all of my 6 children, I don't know anyone else who uses them and i'm curious how many moms use cloth, so if you use cloth, why? and if you use disposables what do you think of cloth? Also for those who use cloth, which kind do you use and what do you like best? I love fuzzi bunz but I also use fitted with wool covers.

I use cloth diapers, and I’m proud to say that I do! The main reason why I use them is the cost of diapers. Disposables cost from $50-80 a month, depending on which brand you buy. That’s a lot of money going out of the house into the landfills! I’ve used Bummis and Bumkins, but my favorites are definitely the Proraps.

I can’t believe people still use cloth diapers these days. I can’t imagine washing the cloth after use, oh no. I heard that cloth diapers are actually good for the babies than regular plastic diapers. WTG mom!

  3. i have never used a cloth diaper, and when my mom mentioned it to me i realized i didnt know much about them! thats great that you are doing that. i am happy with disposables , probably b/c its all i’ve ever used! way to go!

I’ve used cloth diapers off and on with my three kids. I used them almost full-time with my oldest from the time she was 4 months old until 18 months. Then, my 2nd child was born, and I got a bit overwhelmed with two in diapers, so I quit the cloth for a little while, just using them occasionally.

My youngest is now 18 months old, and I’d say that we use about half cloth and half disposable.

I do really, really like them, but I don’t always get them washed as often as I’d like. I also find disposable more convenient when we’re out and about b/c they don’t need to be changed as often. We also never found a nighttime cloth solution that worked for my oldest, so I have used disposables for all my kids at night since then.

My favorite cloth diapers are the pocket ones — fuzzi bunz and happy heiny. I also use prefolds with covers.

I like the cloth because they’re cuter, cheaper, softer, and better for the environment. :-)

We use both the bumGenius and the Happy Heiny one-size diapers and we have had great luck with them so far – our baby is 7 months old. We decided to go with cloth because we did not want to create more waste, but it has also turned out to be a major savings for us.

  6. I used them once or twice but my daughter leaked through them I like the disposables because yes I’m lazy lol and already have enough laundry to do

We were so broke when I had my kids I ended up making cloth diapers out of things I had lying around the house! My kids had the funkiest diapers on the planet – and people constantly asked where I got them from. One other friend uses some I gave her… she uses biodegradable disposables as well. Another friend just about to have a baby has asked for some cloth ones. I’ve only met 2 other mothers that went cloth all the way though. I made mine out of a towelling inner layer, sewn in soaker of 1 layer polar fleece and 3 layers towelling and an outer layer of whatever I could find…. a paisley kaftan, batik sarongs, old flannelette pyjamas.. I put adjustable elastic in the back, elastic around the legs and they did up with press studs.

  8. 17 years ago, i was in cloth diapers when my grandmother took care of me. it was just easier for her that way.. some people just dont like having to deal with the extra **** haha

i just started cloth diapering today i am worried about tonight, but you live to learn right? another mommy in the playgroup i take my 4.5yr old got me thinking about it. I used disposables with my first two babies because i didn’t have a washer or dryer in my house and just couldn’t bring my self to wash them at laundry mat. sadly there is no diaper service within 100 miles of my house. anyway now i have a washer and dryer so i decided what the heck i’ll give it a try. i got a couple bummis wraps and some prefolds and well see how it goes. i always thought cloth was a better choice, but didn’t have the means to do it. so far so good no leaks. if tonight isn’t so successful my mil said she would show me some tricks. (my mom is dead or i would be turning to her).

    I use them because:
    A) I save so much money. $40-$50/month.
    B) The environment. A baby in disposables will contribute approx 1 ton of human feces/waste and plastic into landfills by the time they are toilet trained. It’s estimated that it’s going to take 500 years for today’s diapers to biodegrade. Disposables use 20x more raw materials like crude oil and wood pulp and waste twice the water as cotton diapers. This water waste happens in the manufacturing process.
    C) I was finding gelatinous particles on my son’s skin with diposables and there was some chemical in the diapers that was making his skin look chapped.
    D) Babies in cloth typically toilet train faster because they can feel when they are wetting themselves.
    E) They’re easier than disposables in that I’m not lugging them home from the store and if I need clean diapers I just do some laundry. Also, disposables were more work because they never fit right resulting in huge clean-ups from constant “blow-outs.”
    F) They’re so cute!!
    G) I’ve never had a diaper rash after 6 months of use.
I use chinese prefolds with a Knicknappie or FuzziBunz as a diaper cover except at night when I use a wool cover – no leaks! When I go out and will be gone for a while, I use Bumgenius 3.0s.
Kudos to you for making this world a better place by “being green”, even if those aren’t your reasons for using cloth.
