Is sprinkling baking soda at the bottom of the diaper pail liner safe for cloth diapers?
Hello asked:
Do you think the sprinkled baking soda at the bottom of the Wahmies PUL diaper pail bag will destroy the cloth diapers (Bum Genius, prefolds, Fuzzi Bunz, Kissaluvs, or any others)?

No, it shouldn’t destroy them. That is the dry pail method that many mothers use(myself included), it should be fine and controls the odors well. I have been cloth diapering for about a year now and using the dry pail method with the baking soda, have not had any problems with my diapers.

Yes, it is safe! Baking soda is a very benign product to use in treatment of cloth diapers. I put 1/2 cup in the wash machine to help with odors and stain removal. I also sprinkle some in the bottom of the pail and if it gets smelly I’ll randomly sprinkle some in the pail as well. I am a huge fan of baking soda – I also use it to scrub my kitchen sink, clean my jewelry, and brush my teeth.

Yes it helps with the oders.

I am not familiar with that pail, but if it fits, you may also want to try putting one of those “refrigerator boxes” of baking soda under (not in) the liners. Part of the cardboard peels off and the baking soda is still enclosed but there is a breathable material to soak up even more odors.

YES, it is safe and it does help emliminate odors. You can even wash cloth diapers in baking soda. Many peope add to wash water.

It won’t destroy the diapers by any means. However, it should be dissolved in warm water prior to going into the wash with the diapers as baking soda is abrasive if not dissolved first. This could eventually lead to some premature aging of your diapers.
I use baking soda at the bottom of my pail as well. I however try not to get much of it in the wash with my diapers. I rinse my pail out in the shower to get rid of the excess baking soda. I find the less additives that go in the wash with the diapers the better.
