how do I get started with cloth diapers?
Caitlin asked:
I have a one-year-old and I'm expecting in August. I'd like to start using cloth diapers (it does save money right?) but I have no idea where to start...

It could save money….
If you use a diaper service the cost is about the same as disposables…
If you wash them yourself, you will see an increase in electric (washer, dryer and hot water heater) and water bills. Plus, all of the time it takes…
There is a reason disposables are as popular as they are!!!!

A great way to start is to order through Jillian’s Drawers…they have a program where for $10 you can try cloth. You pay a $100 deposit on your credit card and can try the diapers for one month (I know that if you order before the baby is born, they’ll let you keep them for one month after the baby comes, not one month total) If you like them, you keep them (they send you a variety of different styles) If you only like certain styles, you keep those, and get a credit for the rest. if you don’t like any, you’re only out $10 and at least you tried. We part time cloth diapered our son when he was younger.

CDing can be overwhelming because of all the options. Have you become a member of? It is a forum for buying and selling diapers (yes, you can reuse diapers from someone else, just clean them properly!) and there is also a section for asking questions about diapering and learning the how-to’s and figuring out what works best for you. That’s what helped me out to figure out to finally cloth diaper.
I work full time and use mostly prefolds, covers, soakers, and shorties. It’s great. I have a few pockets, which are also wonderful and I even handwash my diapers when I can. Washing and drying is easy and does NOT increase your bills by too much.
Please give CDing a try. It’s fun and even addicting. Plus, the financial and environmental benefits are great.
