(For parents) do you think cloth diapers are a good choice?

s3xxi3sh0rti3 asked:

My son is 11 months old and before he was born I wanted to use cloth diapers, but my bf didn't want to. I want to use them now, because one they are cheaper and they are better for the environment. Do you think its a good idea?

Cloth diapers are a wonderful way to save money and help protect our environment. There are a number of types that you can use and even liners that will help you to pull the “poo” out of the diapers for easier cleaning. The most important thing is to be sure that you either use a sterilizing cycle on your wash or use a diaper service. Boiling them is an alternative to using a sterile or hot cycle on your washer.

  2. its a good idea but its a pain in the **** to clean and wash them after the baby does its things in a diaper. i like dispoable diapers more its easyer and faster. its up to u. u can try cloth diapers and see if u like it or not.

  3. It is a wonderful and safe alternative to regular diapers!! Have you talked to your pediatrician about it? Maybe getting his/her assurance would put you at ease.

  4. Kudos to you. I wouldn’t have the energy.

  5. I use cloth diapers and i LOVE them!!!

I use Happy Heiny’s one size so I only invested in about 30 for the entire time my son will be in diapers!!

I find that I have plenty of time to clean them… i just put them into the washer before i go to bed and dryer in the morning.

    You should try them!

  6. I started using cloth with my 3rd child and love them. Her little bum is just so cuddly soft in cloth! She also gets fewer diaper rashes when she’s in cloth. I find it’s not that big of a deal doing the extra load of laundry a couple times a week. Folding is what I **** about laundry day, and I don’t have to fold the diapers, so it’s no big deal. As far as having to do a “sterilizing cycle” . . . just washing on hot is adequate. There is A LOT of info online on how to care for diapers–a lot of it is personal preference.

Also, if you’re thinking of cloth as the cloth diapers of yester-year with lots of folding and diaper pins, there are many more options today that are much easier and more convenient. The down side is they are a bit of an investment up front, which was a big downside for us, but in the long run they have saved us money. I purchase a few at a time, and I also sew some (which is easy if you’re so inclined).

So, yes, after two kids in disposables, cloth has worked great for us. If all else fails, you can always re-sell the diapers on diaperswapper.com if it doesn’t work out for you. Cloth diapers have a great resale value, surprisingly.

    absolutely!

it is actually very easy if you use the dry pail method – there are all types of diapers avail – so if you are going to have another child you could spend more than if you are just using it for your baby now – with cloth babies usually potty train faster and he is almost a year –

the cheapest and simplest for me is the prefolds or flats (i use both) with snappi diaper fastener and covers.

it can be tricky finding a cover that works – so do not get more than 1 or 2 at a time until you find one that works – you will not need more than 12 and can probably get by with 6 some people say 4 but i err on the side of caution – i got 12 because the ones that worked best for me are the cheapest avail ($3, dappi diaper cover) they are a bit short in the rise @ 5 mos i am on the large and they only go up to toddler size – so i am starting to look now for my next diaper covers – dont over look wool soakers/covers either – i thought how weird, i would so not like – i LOVE them

you can go for broke and do the AIO’s, AIO one size, or pocket diapers – those to me were too expensive to justify the cost when they do the SAME job just as well
